Kerr Collects North Georgia Special
CHATSWORTH, Ga. (Oct. 27) Tommy Kerr set fast time, led 20 laps of the 30-lap Late Model Special and picked up the $2,000 first place money for his efforts at North Georgia Speedway Saturday night.
The last time Kerr, driving out of Maryville, TN, was at North Georgia Speedway he took home a wrecked race car for his efforts. This time Kerr would be better served, as he would be the car to beat. In the waning laps Kerr would hold off the very determined Knowles and Johnson duo. Knowles on the low side and Johnson on the high side sandwiched Kerr. At one point Knowles had made the pass for the lead, but it was negated by a caution. Kerr was able to keep his line and composure to take the win.
Kerr, who set fast time, would start on the pole and loose the first lap drag race to outside front row starter Anthony White. White would hold off Kerr for 10 laps before Kerr would take the lead. While Kerr and White were battling for the top spot Knowles, who started seventh and Johnson, who started eighth, were moving to the front. Knowles would move into third on lap five and pass White for the second spot on lap 14. On lap 18 Johnson would move past Jay Brinkley for third.
Brinkley would settle for fourth with Mike Hill fifth. Lee Sutton, David Payne, Preston Graves, Gary McPherson and Aaron Ridley rounded out the top 10.
In the first of two B-mains Robert Gant came up on the loosing end of a racing altercation that put him hard into the wall. After the restart from Gant's wreck Tim Day barrel rolled his ride down the back straight. Neither driver was injured, but their cars were severely damaged.
When the checkered flag fell and the smoke had cleared in the Limited/Crate Late Model/Sportsman 20-lap feature, it was Jacob Grizzle, who crossed the line in second getting the win. The first car across the line, driven by Shannon Elrod didn't make tech so Grizzle, who had slid by Chuck Padgett for second on the white flag lap, was awarded the win.
Padgett moved up and was scored second with Richard Dixon third, Josh Johnson fourth and Bobby Doss fifth.
Jeff Kile took the lead on the first lap and never looked back as the Dalton Georgia driver led every lap to win the 15-lap hobby feature. The battle for second was hot and heavy throughout the race between Todd Hernandez, Greg Suddereth and John Parker. On the last lap Jamie Parker, who had moved into third on lap 13, took the spot from Hernandez. Parker would finish second, Hernandez would settle for third, John Parker fourth and Suddereth fifth.
For the first five laps of the Mini Stock feature Jimmy Brown and Danny Burnette waged a torrid battle for the lead. On lap five Brown would claim the top spot with Burnette in second and Billy Callahan third. With three laps to go Rocky McNabb would move into third and in what seemed to be a trend of white flag lap passes took second on the final lap. Finishing behind Brown and McNabb were Burnett, Callahan and Aaron Calvert.
In Econo bomber action it was Justin Thomas leading all 15 laps to take the win. Rob Johnson was second, Russell Schell third, Mike Haygood fourth and Tom Darby fifth.
