The racing was on target at North Georgia Speedway Saturday night, as the dirt track warriors put on another great racing program. The ground-pounding Super Late Models were once again the main attraction, as they put on the best battle of the night. The top two drivers in the points race so far this year, Gary McPherson and Rodney Martin, started the feature from the front row. The two swapped the lead fiercely while setting a lightening pace around the clay oval. Martin worked the high groove and held the lead, but McPherson was attached to his left rear panel. Paul Hollander was riding a close third watching the battle heat up. McPherson kept working the inside lane until he finally passed Martin, and didn’t relinquish the number one spot. Martin came in a close 2nd, with Hollander finishing 3rd. Chuck Christopher was 4th, with Anthony Hill 5th.
The Limited Late Models saw newcomer Trey Holland take his first ever feature victory. Paul Doss finished in the runner up spot, but could not reel in Holland’s #42. Jeff Jones brought the Meth War Education Program Ford home in 3rd, followed by Scott Franks of Tunnel Hill, and Mark Wooten in the 5th spot.
The Crate Late Models provided us with the largest field of the night, as many drivers were doing a “test and tune” for this weeks big $3000 to win StormPay Racing crate spectacular. The racing was door-to-door all over the track, but the field was constantly in hot pursuit of Darel Ownbey’s red #12. Doug Kilgore’s U.S. Marines #44 was in Ownbey’s shadow for the first part of the race, but everyone had their sights set on the leaders. StormPay regular Chip Brindle battled his way up to the 2nd spot, but could not catch Ownbey as he took the checkers. Reed Johnson drove his wounded racecar to a good 3rd place finish, as Kilgore held on to 4th. Jeff Smith rode the high groove to salvage a 5th place spot. North Georgia Speedway is looking forward to hosting its first StormPay race this Saturday night, May 26th. They have a great number of cars that follow the series, combined with the massive amount of crate cars in the area, which should provide some of the best racing of the year at the speedway.
Spencer Singleton, driving the Gene’s Racing Parts #71, reclaimed victory lane in the Sportsman division. He held off last week’s winner Randy Dillard, who came in 2nd. Lee Gray finished 3rd, followed by Scott Jackson and Dyer Lassiter.
Jamie Parker once again took the top spot in the Hobby class. He was pursued by John Clark and Jeff Kile. Finishing 4th was Tim Ford, and previous winner Mike Franks rounded out the top 5.
Greg Callahan took the Mini Stock victory. He was followed by Danny Burnette and Ralph Langston. Chris DeFore and Jon Smith rounded out the top 5.
Saturday, May 26th, will be the StormPay series crate racing headliner. The day will start at Harris-Sutton Chevrolet in Chatsworth, with some of the racecars being showcased, and drivers on hand. A motorcycle ride will kick off at noon, with a benefit bike show to follow. Activities will be going on all day to raise money for the American Cancer Society, so everyone is highly encouraged to attend. A two-seater racecar will be at North Georgia Speedway that night, and rides with your favorite driver will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the charity.
