May 5
by Mark Wooten

The month of May came roaring in Saturday night at North Georgia Speedway. Fans got to see fast, furious, and flipping action at the super-fast high banked dirt track. The Young’s had the track in fantastic shape, and it was probably faster than it has been so far this year.

The Limited Late Models were the headliners this week, as they were competing for the top prize of $1500. Qualifying was extremely fast, as Daven Dilbeck, Roger Dickson, and Rick Hixson topped the lightening fast field. The first of the two heat races provided thrills as the silver #12 of Mark Wooten barrel-rolled 4 times in turn two before coming to rest on its wheels. Wooten luckily walked away shaken, but uninjured. After the field was set, the racing became furious. Roger Dickson put an assault on the top spot, chased down Daven Dilbeck, and set sail. Dickson cashed in on the top spot, and after door-to-door action for many laps, Rick Hixson, in the Genes Racing Parts Chevy, edged out Dilbeck for the runner up spot. Dilbeck claimed 3rd, followed by the Phatt Boyz Express of Jeff Jones, and the #1 of Trig Parris.

The Super Late Models had some heavy metal action, as a lot of paint was swapped by many of the front runners. Derek “The Ditch Digger” Ellis led the first portion of the race, as the familiar 29m of Gary McPherson faded back to around mid-pack. Never count out “The Big Mac” at North Georgia Speedway, because as the race was winding down, the 29m was winding up! McPherson made a hard charge, took the lead, and never looked back until the checkers fell. Lee Sutton made a late surge to the front, but could only muster up the 2nd spot. “The Rocket Man” Rodney Martin took third, followed by Ellis, and Paul Hollander rounding out the top 5.

The Crate Late Models held up their end of the excitement with door-to-door racing, as Darel Ownbey continued his winning ways topping the very competitive field. Dalton’s Randy Hill got up beside Ownbey a couple of times, but could not take his Allsouth Racing Warrior to the point. Hill settled for a strong 2nd, followed by Stewart Patrick, JJ Nye, and Doug Kilgore.

In the 15 lap Sportsman feature, Scott Jackson had his eyes on the checkers as Spencer Singleton was slowly carving his way through the field. Jackson claimed his 2nd win of the season as Singleton settled in for the runner up spot. Randy Dillard came across the line 3rd, followed by Lee Gray and Kevin Burke. The major excitement in the Sportsman division began in a heat race when the #60 car of Joe Picklesimer took a violent tumble in turn 3 and came to rest on its roof. Track officials and attendants had to cut Picklesimer from the car, and he was treated at a local hospital. He has since been released with no major injuries.

The Hobby racers provided some of the best racing night as the top group battled it out for the lead. Mike Franks set an early pace, while the #73 of Jamie Parker was working his way to the front. Just as Parker had passed the top cars and took the lead, his own rear wheel passed him in turn 2 and ended his night. Franks reassumed the lead and didn’t relinquish it again as he claimed the win. Larry Higgins took the 2nd spot, followed by a hard charging Donnie Farmer, and John Clark.

The Mini Stocks stirred up the hornets nest Saturday night, as Ross Baines of Rockmart, GA commanded the field and stole the show with his victory. He was chased across the line by Chris DeFore claiming 2nd, and Greg Callahan in the 3rd spot.

Wild racing continues next Saturday night as the Advance Auto Thunder Series rolls back into town. Get there early, as there was a major crown last time these guys were in town, with over 60 Super Late Models on hand! We are expecting another phenomenal race and look forward to seeing you there.
