Owens Tops Lucas Bash at North Georgia
CHATSWORTH, Ga. (June 14) In front of a standing room only crowd for the reopening of North Georgia Speedway, Jimmy Owens put on a dominant performance to win the Harris Sutton Chevrolet 40. For the Newport, Tenn. driver it was his second career win on the Lucas Late Model Dirt Series.
With 10 laps to go Owens, who led all 40 laps, came up on the field and began working lapped traffic. While Owens began lapping cars with relative ease, the battle for second between Wendell Wallace and Brad Neat would continue for another five laps when Wallace would move back past Neat to retake the second spot. Wallace would hold on for second with Neat finishing third. Front Row starter Shane Tankersley would finish fourth and Robert Gant fifth.
When the starting field of 24 flashed under the flag stand to record the first lap pole sitter Owens was in the lead and was followed by Wendell Wallace, Brad Neat, Shane Tankersley and North Georgia point leader Gary McPherson. After the first of two cautions flew on lap 10 the top five remained the same, but on the restart Neat would charge into second relegating Wallace to third.
The second and final caution flag flew on lap 21 and on the restart Owens would continue his dominance with Neat and Wallace battling behind. The battle for the next three spots between Tankersley, Gant and McPherson also began heating up. Tankersly would finish fourth while Gant would out duel McPherson for fifth.
