Johnson from the Rear for North Georgia Win
CHATSWORTH, Ga. (June 22) Problems in his heat relegated Ronnie Johnson to a dead last starting position in the Late Model feature Friday night at North Georgia Speedway, but that did not deter the crafty veteran as he blew threw the field to take the win.
Whatever problems Johnson had in his heat race were fixed by the time the feature rolled around as Johnson used the whole race track to pass the other 14 Late Models and take the win. With five laps to go in the 30 lap feature Johnson moved past Skip Arp for second. When the white flag fell he passed the last car, leader Lamar Scoggin, and to the checkered flag for the win.
Scoggins settled for second, early leader Arp was third, Derek Ellis fourth, and Riley Hickman fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Paul Hollander, Lee Sutton, Mike Satterfield, Davy Davis and Tony Knowles.
For the second Friday night in a row Leon Brindle took the Limited Late Model win. The crafty veteran took the lead on the first lap and kept Shannon Bearden at bay for all 20 circuits to take the win. Bearden finished second to Brindle for the second week in a row with point leader PD Doss finishing third. Brian Jackson and Caleb Bearden rounded out the top five.
First holding off Doug Kilgore and then point leader Darryl Ownbey, Jeff Smith won the Crate Late Model feature leading every lap. Ownbey finished second, Kilgore third, Allen Green fourth and Reed Johnson fifth.
When problems befell race leader Spencer Singleton on lap 14 of the 15 lap Sportsman feature it opened the door for Lee Gray to take the lead and the win. Randy Dillard was second and was followed across the stripe by Lisa Cantrell, Tony Westmorland and Scott Jackson. Point leader Singleton would be scored seventh in the final tally.
Jamie Parker would take the Hobby win and extend his season point lead over Larry Higgins who finished sixth. Leading every lap Parker would take the win over Jeff Rile, Tim Ford, Jon Clark and Jon Parker.
Mini Stock/Pony action saw Grady Stoke best Greg Callahan to take the win. Chris Defore was third, Travis Jacobsen fourth and Randall McGuire fifth.
Donnie Price topped the Bomber field as he powered his way to a win over Ted Montgomery, Tom Darby, Rob Johnson and Doug Hopson.
All racing was completed and everyone was on their way home a little after 10 pm. Next Friday night will be the Firecracker 40 paying $3,000 to win for Late Models, plus racing in all regular divisions. Due to a bureaucratic snafu there will be no fireworks.
